Week 3 | Day 5 THE HEALING OF THE PARALYTIC Matthew 9:1-8 | Mark 2:1-12 | Luke 5:17-26

Back in Capernaum, Jesus is teaching in a packed house—so full that four friends can’t get their paralyzed buddy through the door; yet they refuse to accept “too crowded” as the final answer. So, they climbed up, tore through the roof, and lowered him right in front of Jesus. It’s a bold interruption, but it’s also a beautiful picture of faith that refuses to quit and compassion for a friend in need.

Jesus’ first words are surprising. He didn’t begin with the man’s legs—He started with the man’s soul. “Son, your sins are forgiven.” The religious critics bristled, because only God can forgive sins. Jesus then did what only God can do—He healed the man publicly to prove His authority invisibly—authority not just to restore a body, but to rescue a life. The man then stood up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone. The crowd was amazed. The critics were exposed. And Jesus made the point—the “Jesus way” is always the best way—full of truth, mercy, and authority.

APPLICATION

1. Be the Kind of Person Who Carries Faith When Others Can’t

Good friends don’t just sympathize; they shoulder burdens, get creative, and refuse to quit. Who in your life needs “roof-ripping” persistence right now?

2. The Best Thing You Can Ever Do for Someone is Take Them to Jesus

The miracle didn’t start with methods—it started with proximity to Christ. Your role may be as simple (and as costly) as helping someone get near Him.

3. Expect Critics—don’t be Controlled by Them

There will always be voices that misunderstand what God is doing and try to force you into their small categories. Don’t let the noise of people drown out the word of Jesus.

4. Choose Jesus Over Approval Every Time

You can follow Christ or you can blend in; you usually can’t do both. Side with Jesus—especially when obedience is inconvenient.

5. Honor the Letter and the Spirit of God’s Law and Word

The Pharisees loved technicalities but missed the heart of God. Ask: Am I using “rightness” to avoid righteousness? Truth without love becomes harsh; love without truth becomes hollow.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You that You not only heal what’s broken in our bodies and circumstances, but You forgive what’s broken in our souls. Give me the kind of faith that won’t be stopped by obstacles, and make me the kind of friend who will do whatever it takes to bring others to You. Help me recognize the critic’s voice—outside of me and inside of me—and not submit to it. Teach me to honor Your Word in both letter and spirit, without drifting into cold legalism or careless compromise. Open my eyes to see You at work around me today, and give me courage to join You where You’re moving. Amen.
