Week 10 | Day 4 – CHRISTIANITY IN MOTION – Romans 12:9-21

Romans 12:9–21 is a smorgasbord of Jesus-shaped living instructions—a collection of things to do and to avoid that together describe the Christian life. In it are (21) encouragements to engage and (8) encouragements to avoid, all aimed at helping us live out God’s truth and love so others see and experience Jesus through our lives. Each instruction is a call to serve and care for people as we live alert to the actions that can lead us astray or down a path of ungodliness. The whole list lands on this summary: do not be overcome by evil (what is not godly), but overcome evil with good (what is godly).

APPLICATION

1 - Start with Surrender

In romans 12:1-2, we are encouraged to offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice so these instructions move from impossible in the flesh to possible by His Spirit.

2 - Be Transformed, not Conformed

The great struggle to live out these instructions occurs between our flesh and the Holy Spirit indwelling within us. As a result, we must choose daily, minute-by-minute the renewing work of the Holy Spirit over the ambitions, appetites, and attitudes of this world, the demonic, and our flesh.

3 - Choose to Live as the Body of Christ

A significant support to abiding and thriving in Christ is the body of Christ—the church. In choosing to be a vibrant, functional part of Christ’s body, spurring one another along in the faith will help us to experience and share God’s love in a visible and practical way.

4 - Trade Self-focus for Jesus-focus

Realize and never forget that our human nature defaults to look out only for itself; therefore, we must volitionally choose Jesus daily if we want to be a living expression of Jesus to the people around us as He has called us.

5 - Refuse to Allow Wrong to Overwhelm You

Don’t be overcome by the flesh, the world, or the demonic; instead, be overwhelmed by the Word, the Spirit, and God’s grace and mercy—and then do what is godly.

PRAYER

Lord, thank you that I have meaning and purpose in life, and more importantly, Your Holy Spirit and Word to lead, guide, and influence my life. Help me today to put into practice these instructions in Romans 12:9-21 so that I will not be overcome by evil, but can overcome evil with what’s good and Godly. Thank you for your love and for working in me in order to work through me for Your glory and my good. Amen.
